Driving In Florida's Rain and Poor Weather Conditions
For some reason our office was getting more auto accident phone calls during the summer, particularly around 5pm between Mondays and Fridays. The time makes sense because there are more people on the road driving home from work. Drivers that are tired and irritable from a long work day are more susceptible to making mistakes, reckless driving, and road rage. But why did the phone calls die off during the winter months? The answer was in the weather forecast.
Florida is known for quick changes in weather. It can be sunny one minute and pouring down rain the next. During the summer around 4 pm thunderstorms start forming over Orlando and dump rain as they move toward the east coast and out to sea. Visibility can go from 5 miles to 5 to 10 feet in a matter of seconds. Many tourists are not use to this extreme change in weather and do not know how to handle it. Combine low visibility with traveling on a busy highway at 70 mph and there will be a spike in car accidents.
